Behavior Change
Behavior change is a meaningful shift in what people do, choose, or apply after learning — supported by practice, feedback, reinforcement, and the conditions needed to perform successfully.

Learning Matters When People Do Something Differently
Behavior change is a meaningful shift in what people do, choose, or apply after a learning experience or performance intervention.
Training can support that change, but knowledge alone does not guarantee new behavior. People also need the right practice, environment, support, motivation, and opportunity to act.
Define the Behavior You Want to See
A behavior should describe something observable. If you cannot tell whether someone did it, the outcome may still be too vague.
Understanding is difficult to observe directly. What would empathy actually look like during a customer interaction?
Now the desired behavior can guide practice, feedback, coaching, and measurement.
Knowing What to Do Is Not the Same as Doing It
Learners can pass a quiz and still return to old habits. Behavior change requires more than exposure to information.
The learner can recall the steps, identify the correct answer, or explain what should happen.
The learner recognizes the situation, makes the right decision, and carries out the behavior.
Look for What Gets in the Way of Behavior Change
When people know what to do but still do something else, the problem may be outside the training.
Do people have the knowledge and skill needed to perform the behavior?
Do systems, tools, time, workload, and processes make the behavior possible?
Do people see a reason to change, and are the right behaviors encouraged or reinforced?
Are coaching, reminders, job aids, feedback, and manager support available when needed?
Design Practice That Builds the Desired Behavior
If people need to behave differently on the job, give them opportunities to rehearse that behavior during learning.
Support the New Behavior After the Learning Ends
Behavior change is easier to sustain when the work environment reinforces what the learning introduced.

Measure Behavior Change — Not Just Training Activity
Completion and quiz scores can tell us something about the learning experience. They do not automatically tell us whether workplace behavior changed.
Useful information — but it only tells us that people completed the experience.
